Widely recognized as one of the greatest sites in the Classical world, Aphrodisias is a magnificent city of marble dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of beauty, love, and sex. The city was struck by a massive earthquake in the seventh century, and yet much of it is remarkably well preserved. In this program, a team of historical detectives uses evidence from recent excavations, scientific studies, and historical documents to piece together clues as to what Aphrodisias might have looked like—as well as shed light on the former slave who ordered the city to be built.
