|
This 2008 film, adapted from Matt Cohen's novel Emotional Arithmetic, explores the emotional effects of historical traumas and how each of our histories molds our lives. Holocaust survivor Melanie (Susan Sarandon), unhappily married to a retired professor (Christopher Plummer), spends her days on a picturesque Canadian farm, chronicling the world's daily atrocities reported in the newspaper. When she invites fellow Holocaust survivor Jakob (Max von Sydow) to her home, he unexpectedly brings Christopher (Gabriel Byrne), whose love for Melanie has never diminished since their confinement in an internment camp. Old feelings and long-suppressed memories are stirred up and revealed at a climactic, life-changing feast.
