A romantic comedy based on the supposed relationship between Jane Austen and Thomas Langlois Lefroy revealed in Jon Spence's book Becoming Jane Austen, this 2007 film stars Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy as Jane and Tom, and won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Independent Film. After a rocky introduction, Jane and Tom grow closer over time and fall in love, though they realize Tom's marriage to the penniless Jane would doom the future of his family. Julie Walters and James Cromwell are featured as Jane's parents, Maggie Smith as Lady Gresham, and Ian Richardson as Tom's stern uncle Judge Langlois.
