In 1972 UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) created the World Heritage Foundation, a program to identify and protect what it deems world heritage sites—irreplaceable environments of international value, ranging from natural areas to whole urban centers. More than 600 such sites have been designated for protection on four continents, including places of worship, monuments, living settlements, and historic complexes that, taken together, constitute a tour of humanity's history, cultures and creative expressions. This highly visual survey presents 46 living archaeological environments, from such continuously occupied cities as Crakow, Poland, and old Havana, Cuba, to archeological treasures like Macchu Picchu in Peru and Angkor Wat in Cambodia; Petra in Jordan and the Imperial Forums in Rome; and the Casbah of Algiers. Each is presented with large color photos and a detailed explanatory text.
