These "marches and dances" are all unfailingly delightful. Among the most effervescent are Mozart's contredanses on a theme from "Non piů andrai," K. 609, and Hungarian dances by Brahms and Dvorák. Several powerful and thrilling marches derive from Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber, Verdi's Aida, Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet ("Montagues and Capulets"), and Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique. "What characterizes Abbado's work with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra … [is] a great serenity, a completely natural musicmaking, a common breathing and feeling, which apparently needed no guidance and leadership, but is virtually out of the will to work together shaping the work…. Nothing here is made up or demonstrative, but is simply natural and right."—Musik & Theater, Zurich
