"Who today could toss off the stratospheric 'Sempre libera' with such spectacular aplomb?" Washington Post critic Tim Page posed this rhetorical question when rejoicing over the reissue of Sutherland's La Traviata, and her performance of that aria is captured here ("the voice is so opulent, agile and beautifully modulated"). Other challenging, signature roles that had opera fans besotted with Sutherland were her triumphs as Lucia (mad scene) and Norma ("Casta diva") in Donizetti and Bellini's bel canto operas; her Olympia in Tales of Hoffmann ("Les oiseux dans la charmille"); and her delightful Marie in La fille du régiment ("Pour ce contrat fatal ... Salut à la France!”). Other aspects of Sutherland's artistry (and examples of why she was nicknamed "La Stupenda") are the "Wiljalied" from The Merry Widow and "Let the Bright Seraphim" from Samson, not to mention the "Bell Song" from Lakmé and the "Jewel Song" from Faust!
