Like Ottorino Respighi did orchestrally with Ancient Airs and Dances, Stephen Stubbs et al. construct an utterly enchanting, dancelike musical tapestry drawn from centuries-old sonatas and suites. Touched on are Corelli's "La Folia" Sonata, Caccini's song "Amarilli, mia bella,'' Farina's "Sonata Seconda Detta la Desperata,'' and "Folias d'Espagna,'' whose chord progression many Baroque composers adapted. "Instead of the neatly compiled historical or stylistic anthology that has become the standard-issue early-music collection … [they] offer a richly embellished extended fantasy in which they hop back and forth between early and late Baroque works … with ensemble improvisations as connecting tissue."—NYTimes "A fascinating mix of sonatas and dances from 17th-century Italy and Slovakia…. Completely calming and absolutely absorbing."—Northern Echo
