"Perlman's superb account of Lalo's five-movement Spanish bouquet, dashing and bewitching by turns … is in a class of its own, and still heads the list of available versions, irrespective of price," wrote Gramophone in 1995 of this late 1980s recording. They were equally enthusiastic about the concerto: "Perlman's robust opening … immediately catches one up and the Andantino follows, its tranquil, wistful charm shared by orchestra and soloist alike. A characteristic Saint-Saëns highlight of the finale, with all its dash and drama (the soloist relishing every roulade and tarantella), is the contrasting entry of a pianissimo cantabile chorale on the strings … a moment of gossamer magic."
