These early 1970s recordings were hailed by Gramophone as "a magnificent achievement in every way." Solti's accounts of the Sixth Symphony ("Pastoral") radiates joy, as does the Eighth, which is in the same key and combines a Haydnesque wit with a Beethovinian energy.

Here is a man who thinks and feels his Beethoven with total conviction, and wants us simply to share it with him…. A great Beethoven interpreter, one who can span every range of expression and leave one completely fulfilled."—Gramophone
