Alfred Brendel was the first pianist to record Beethoven's complete piano works. A master of the Austro-German classics, he made a memorable recording in 1977 of Beethoven's final concerto. It is the only one in which the composer, who was nearly deaf and could not debut it himself, wrote down a cadenza to be played by the pianist. The companion piece is the three-movement Fantasia for piano, chorus, and orchestra ("Choral Fantasy"), Op. 80. "An electrifying vitality is also evident in Brendel's studio recordings of the concertos … Haitink's control of rhythm, line, accentuation and all the things that go to define musical character are evident from the start."—Gramophone
