Blessed with superabundant talent and drive, Leonard Bernstein had an equally powerful impact on both popular and classical music. The two genres overlap a bit in the presence of Met baritone Thomas Hampson singing 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue's "To Make Us Proud" and in the selections from Candide (the Overture and the showstopping "Glitter and Be Gay"; sung by soprano June Anderson, this fabulous tour de force sends up arias like the "Jewel Song" from Faust). Bernstein himself re-created his groundbreaking musical West Side Story ("Tonight," "America," "Ballet Sequence") in the 1990s for Deutsche Grammophon, and opera stars June Anderson, Tatiana Troyanos, and Kiri Te Kanawa took part in that recording. Broadway legend Mary Martin's "Lucky to Be Me" and Nancy Walker's star-making "I Can Cook" come from the great Comden-Green collaboration On the Town.
