"The art of the Italian tenor, which had lately seemed to be in the doldrums, is certainly looking up," wrote Gramophone when Luciano Pavarotti appeared on the scene. By venturing outside opera halls and performing outside for huge audiences (and on television for millions of viewers), the Italian tenor from Modena became the face—and voice—of opera. In the process he achieved a level of worldwide fame usually reserved for pop stars. In this 1985 album he sings some of his favorite songs from his native land.
