"Masur and the Gewandhaus Orchestra deserve credit for playing these pieces in a straightforward manner, without pretensions or novelties, and [these are] solid performances of Beethoven's Symphony No. 4 in B flat major and the Symphony No. 6 in F major, 'Pastoral'…. These two works show Beethoven's amiable side, with little of the heroic drama and none of the cosmic force displayed in the odd-numbered symphonies.
