Description
In 1817 four young Harper brothers opened a printing shop in downtown Manhattan. Two centuries later, their small enterprise has grown into one of the world's largest and most successful publishing houses. Eugene Exman was editor-manager of Harper's religious book department. He was made a member of the firm's board of directors in 1944, a vice president in 1955, and retired in 1965 after 35 years with the company. His classic history, originally published in 1967, charts the birth and growth of a literary empire, with anecdotes about artists and authors from Charles Dickens, George Eliot, and Herman Melville to Thomas Wolfe, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Aldous Huxley.
