The author of the Lola and Charlie books here gives us an equally frenetic adventure involving an uncle in the hospital, a mom who has to go look after him, and another uncle called in to babysit—Uncle Ted, the firefighter, who tends to get Clarice Bean (our narrator) and her little brother Minal Cricket all wound up whenever he visits. Mom holds Ted to several conditions, and at first all goes well—until Minal lets Clarice's class guinea pig Albert out of his hutch, and Albert makes a run for it. In the ensuing chaos, Albert is claimed by a neighbor, Minal gets his head stuck in a fence, Grandad wanders off, and the fire department shows up. Lauren Child's loose cartooning style adds plenty of energy to this story for readers 4 to 7.
