Steve McQueen received a Golden Globe nomination for his convincing portrayal of Henri Charrière, aka Papillon ("Butterfly"), a falsely accused inmate of Devil's Island with an unrelenting drive to escape. Equally good is Dustin Hoffman as Charrière's anxious and defenseless fellow convict, who pays Charrière to protect him. Based on Charrière's bestselling memoir, this 1973 film is filled with indelible scenes depicting the horror of the French penal system. The late Jerry Goldsmith's consummate score earned him his sixth Academy Award nomination (of an eventual 18).
