Greer Garson earned the second of her seven Academy Award nominations for her performance in this film, loosely based on the life of Edna Gladney, founder of the Texas Children's Home and Aid Society. The 1941 tearjerker was nominated for four more Oscars, including Best Picture, and won for Best Art Direction. As Gladney, Garson petitions the the Texas Legislature to take the word illegitimate off of birth certificates so that the "creatures of shame" might be adopted into loving homes.
