Humble structures of the California desert are presented here in formal portraits by photographer Ed Freeman, who finds in them hope and also faded dreams, a forlorn stubbornness to stand against the desert and an inevitable decay. Freeman depicts these dwellings, businesses, churches, and storage sheds in digital images that he manipulates to bring out their true character—washing the colors out of a castle-like restaurant, for example, and then hanging a dramatic sky above, or isolating a supermarket from its neighbors parking lot clutter and then restoring its façade to its former glory. Freeman also explains how the photos were created, making Desert Realty a veritable primer on digital image manipulation.
