As Roy "Mad Dog" Earle, Humphrey Bogart inherited a role rejected by Paul Muni and George Raft and delivered a breakout performance that elevated him from bit player to major star in this 1941 film. Director Raoul Walsh, working with a screenplay by John Huston, expands the narrow confines of the gangster genre into an early triumph of film noir. A former bootlegger just released from prison, Earle clashes with the new generation of callow punks he is hired to lead on a disastrous hotel robbery. Only Marie (Ida Lupino), a weary 1930s survivor like Earle, remains loyal when the cops close in for the iconic finale, shot in the scenic Sierra Nevada.
