Journalist and explorer David Burke was smitten with Antarctica on his first visit in 1958. In 2001 he made his sixth journey there, traveling aboard the enormous Russian icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov, whose objective was to go farther south than any ship had sailed before. In this book, interspersed with reports from early Antarctic explorers and illustrated with contemporary and archival black and white photos, Burke underscores just how much the Antarctic has changed in the past century. He documents his journey from Hobart, Australia to the Ross Sea region and his encounter with B15, the world's largest iceberg, which broke away from the Ross Ice Shelf in 2000.
