Description
"Clarinettist Richard Hosford leads an enjoyable journey through some of the highways and byways of 19th-century Romanticism. The unusual scoring of Schumann's Fairy Tales for clarinet, viola and piano makes it ideal for the Nash's flexible configuration, and Hosford, viola player Lawrence Power and pianist Ian Brown capture perfectly the music's fantasy and poeticism. Ignaz Moscheles's Fantasy, Variations and Finale for clarinet, violin, cello and piano, written in 1819, is more of a rarity. Brown has fun with the piano cadenza that dominates the Fantasy section, but all the players evidently enjoy the banter of the ensuing variations on a Bohemian folk-song. Last comes that great masterpiece of Brahms's final years, the Clarinet Quintet, imbued here with a sense of world-weary nostalgia, yet with enough of the life force to convey its deep humanity."The Telegraph

"It's a thoughtful, supple reading marked by a wonderful sense of teamwork, with Richard Hosford's fluid clarinet subtly embedded in the overall sound, and some magical string sonorities."BBC Music

"Crowned by a sublime performance of Brahms' Clarinet Quintet, this recital simply oozes class."Classic FMWinner of Gramophone's 2011 Label of the Year award (and the first label dedicated to live recordings to win the prestigious accolade), the "Wigmore Hall Live" recording series continues to be "a source of sound documents to cherish" (BBC Music). This venue holds a unique place in London musical life and is an essential platform for the world's most sought-after soloists and chamber musicians. Every week a concert is broadcast on radio and the Internet, but with the launching of this recording label, Wigmore's great performances can be a revelation and a source of enduring pleasure to music lovers worldwide.
