Description
|
|
|
|
Earning a number of best picture awards in China, and named an official selection of the Sundance, Toronto, Boston, Seattle, Tokyo, and Moscow film festivals, this 2000 film is inspired by the life of Liu Jinglun, and depicts the wondrous influence of movies in Peking (Beijing) at the turn of the 20th century. Photographer Liu (played by Xia Yu) is intrigued with the new technologies of the West, and meets an Englishman (Jared Harris) who wants to import "moving pictures"—an industry that would defy the traditions of Liu's culture. Liu must choose between loyalty to his family and bettering his own standing in society in order to marry the woman he loves. This film is in Mandarin and English, with English subtitles.
