Description
Giancarlo Menotti's colorful ballet Sebastian was originally choreographed in 1944 by the Ballet International and has been restaged many times thereafter. When it was first heard in New York, Times critic Mark Schubart described the music as "prettily orchestrated, and the more violent portions are filled with elaborate percussion effects, flutter-tonguing on the brasses and carefully balanced, effective sonorities." He noted also the "attractive melodies, simple in intent and immediate in appeal."

"Menotti borrows shamelessly from The Rite of Spring, but the church bells in the wrong key … are superb. The gentle lyricism of the 'Barcarolle' and especially the final 'Pavane' shows Menotti at his best—no histrionics, no sentimentality, just natural melody…. The Legend for oboe and strings is surely a real discovery for oboists—a charming concert piece…. The slightly folksy amiability reflects the period of the 1950s as well as the composer himself…. The Lyric Scene for flute and strings is in memory of Busoni, who was one of Luening's teachers when he and his family lived in Zurich during and after the First World War. Luening worked as a professional flute player, conducted and even acted as a member of James Joyce's English Players Company. So he has seen history, participated in the avant-garde and yet his suave Lyric Scene might almost be by Fauré!"—Gramophone
