This superb album of 28 large photographs—each 22 x 15 inches, across two pages—meditates on stages of life through the cycle of a single bunch of white tulips as it passes through time. From green shoots and buds through glorious blooms, and then to falling petals and the eventual fading and browning of pistils and leaves, German photographer Sabine Pankert captures these flowers in elegant close-up images. Her selective focus reveals delicate structures like grains of pollen and also abstract textures within the fiber of the petals. The otherwise wordless book is set with Hermann Hesse's poem "Stages" as a preface.
