Often shortened from the original rhyme to a one-word substitution, terms like "bristols," "Barnaby," "tea-leaf," "bird," and "Brahms and Liszt" avoided saying real words that could get you in trouble, though a number of them are now so common, everyone knows what they mean without knowing they were once Cockney.
