Pioneering African American artist Charles Alston (1907–1977) experimented with a variety of genres and styles including realist murals, stylized portraits, and abstract expressionist works. A founder of the WPA Harlem Art Workshop and the first black supervisor in the WPA Federal Art Project, Alston received many official distinctions in his lifetime. This monograph displays Alston's considerable accomplishments in painting and sculpture, seen in nearly 60 color plates, while the text also traces his distinguished dual career as an artist and teacher.
