Last of the great MGM musicals, Lerner & Loewe's direct-to-screen follow-up to their 1956 Broadway hit My Fair Lady won an unprecedented nine Academy Awards in 1959, plus a special Oscar for Maurice Chevalier. Lyricist Alan Jay Lerner adapted it for the screen from Colette's fin-de-siècle novella about a courtesan in waiting, and Vincente Minnelli directed. As the title character, Leslie Caron blossoms from girlish gawkishness to cultured glamour under the guidance of mentors Chevalier and Hermione Gingold. Lerner later declared the transcendent Oscar-winning title song his career favorite.
