As the titular "me," high school thespian Richard Samuels (Zac Efron) lucks into a small role in the 21-year-old "boy wonder's" (Christian McKay) landmark production of Julius Caesar (set in Fascist Italy) at the Mercury Theatre in 1937. Claire Danes plays an enterprising stage assistant who becomes drawn into the personal lives of both Samuels and Welles. But this 2009 backstage comedy/drama rightfully belongs to McKay, whose BAFTA-nominated performance brilliantly captures the genius, arrogance, and preening showmanship of a man who never bothered to merely speak when he could instead declaim.
