|
|
Though snubbed by the American Academy, Clint Eastwood's 2008 film—in which he both stars and directs—won Best Foreign Film honors in France, Italy, Spain, Uruguay, and Japan. A grumpy widower, Korean War veteran, retired auto worker, and the last white resident of his Detroit side street, Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) shows equal disdain for his dysfunctional relatives and his Hmong immigrant neighbors. But when the feisty girl next door (Ahney Her) and her conflicted brother (Bee Vang) draw Walt into a local gang feud involving his most prized possession (a 1972 Ford Gran Torino), the former racist gains a new understanding of and respect for community.
