|
Diane Keaton received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of the title character, a repressed, neurasthenic wife of a priggish prison warden (Edward Herrmann) in fin-de-siècle Pittsburgh. Mel Gibson is dangerous death row inmate Ed Biddle, who, along with his brother Jack (Matthew Modine), restlessly awaits his fate. Based on a true story, this gothic romance follows the forbidden affair that unfolds between Biddle and Mrs. Soffel. Filmmaker Gillian Armstrong earned a Golden Bear nomination at the Berlin Film Festival in 1985 for her astute direction and superb period recreation.
