Acclaimed filmmaker Ken Loach won the Young Cinema Award at Cannes in 1981 with this unflinching portrait of working-class youth, establishing himself as a leading proponent of socialist realism. The movie follows three teenagers from economically devastated Sheffield, whose "looks and smiles" become desperate as they struggle for a meaningful life against a backdrop of Thatcherism and the troubles in Northern Ireland. Alan joins the army and becomes emotionally brutalized while serving in Belfast. His best friend Mick vents his frustration in street brawls but finds unexpected happiness when he falls for a pretty shoe store clerk (Carolyn Nicholson).
