Did you know that women in Plains tribes have moved to the forefront of powwow drumming in recent years? The drum circles of the Crying Woman Singers are proudly composed of women from the northernmost Canadian and U.S. plains. These 30 selections cover social and ceremonial dance songs from Native North America, as well as contemporary flute songs, pop-oriented folk, and poetry set to jazz by writer Joy Harjo and Poetic Justice. Highlights are "Coming Out Song," "Beautiful Mountain," and "Honoring Song for Young Man Afraid of His Horse." "Like its highly acclaimed precusor, this CD presents a wide range of traditional and contemporary musical practices, constituting an admirable introduction to the variety and depth of women's music in First Nations (Native American) communities."—Ethnomusicology The folk music archives that form the wellspring of these Smithsonian recordings are truly incomparable. Encompassing a wide variety of styles, they reflect the heart, soul, and backbone of the American experience as well as indigenous music from around the world. Folkways' impeccable sound and documentation does these artists proud, setting their work off as the treasure it is.
