Capoeira is a ritual dance/martial arts form from Brazil, accompanied here by the berimbau, a single-string, bowed percussion instrument. A combination of mental and physical "poetry in motion," this graceful art form's self-defense–styled movements resulted from a cross-pollination of African origins and Brazilian culture and is spreading exponentially throughout the world. "So good and enthralling that it's impossible not to be taken into each piece. Mestre Moraes lays out the ladainhas, and all the pieces relate to the art of capoeira. It's very rhythmic, essentially just singing and rhythm…. The songs themselves cover an interesting range … even one called 'Japan' about Brazilians fighting in World War II. It's all fascinating stuff—but more than that. This is a peek into a remarkable way of life."—All Music Guide The folk music archives that form the wellspring of these Smithsonian recordings are truly incomparable. Encompassing a wide variety of styles, they reflect the heart, soul, and backbone of the American experience as well as indigenous music from around the world. Folkways' impeccable sound and documentation does these artists proud, setting their work off as the treasure it is.
