After receiving a 2004 Grammy for lifetime achievement, Ella Jenkins saw another one bestowed the next year on a tribute album that preserved this live concert. A quorum of fellow folk singers were on hand to hail and honor this world-famous musician, who began recording for children in the 1950s. All of them are also aces at entertaining kids (and their parents), with great performances of "Go, Miss Mary Mack" by Sweet Honey in the Rock, "Let's All Sing a Yodeling Song" by Riders in the Sky, "The World Is Big, the World Is Small" by Pete Seeger, "Different" by John McCutcheon, and "I Know a Tom" by Tom Paxton. Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer join up with Paxton for a trio version of "The Marvelous Toy," and Ella herself takes the stage for "I Know a City Called Okeechobee." There are 18 numbers in all, including two rousing group sing-alongs. "Her own taste of music is so broad and so vast—you know, she lov es Latin songs and Latin rhythms, but then she loves cowboy music and yodeling and then she loves the playground songs. Ella's contributions steered children's music into an eclectic direction."—Cathy Fink, on NPR The folk music archives that form the wellspring of these Smithsonian recordings are truly incomparable. Encompassing a wide variety of styles, they reflect the heart, soul, and backbone of the American experience as well as indigenous music from around the world. Folkways' impeccable sound and documentation does these artists proud, setting their work off as the treasure it is.
