In this picture-book interpretation of a popular game of tag in Britain, a little girl wanders off in her grandfather's antique shop and finds an enormous clock with a ladder inside—a ladder that leads up and up to a room full of books. She opens one and reads aloud, "What's the time, Mr. Wolf?" A growly voice answers: it's 7 o'clock, time to get up. She asks again and it's 9, and again—and this time it's dinner time! The wolf is after her, chasing her down the ladder and nearly catching her, until she slams the book shut and he disappears in a puff of dust. Gemma Raynor illustrates the tale for readers up to 7 in stylized watercolors.
