Edward James Olmos delivers an inspirational, Academy Award–nominated performance as the real-life Jaime Escalante, a math teacher at East Los Angeles' Garfield High School who refuses to write off his inner-city students as incapable of advanced mathematics. He cajoles, pushes, threatens, and ultimately inspires his 18 kids, once struggling with fractions, to pass the national advanced placement calculus exam. Lou Diamond Phillips and Andy Garcia costar in this 1988 film, which also earned director and co-writer Ramón Menéndez a Sundance Grand Jury Prize nomination.
