The Grand Trunk Road, established in the north of India in the 16th century as a trade route from Afghanistan to the Bay of Bengal, has contributed much to the history and culture of India. Telling the story of this route in a running text, and picturing the region in color photographs, this unusual book makes the history and geography of the Grand Trunk come alive in scores of traditional recipes, from Chappali Kebab, and Rezala (lamb and yogurt curry) to Amritsari Kulcha (vegetable stuffed bread) and the thickened milk pudding Rabri. Among the illustrations are traditional cart races, a rare aerial view of the Taj Mahal on the Yamuna River, and the fabulously painted and kitsch-encrusted trucks that ply the road.
