Almost unknown before the mid-19th century, the Mohave were an obscure tribe living in what is today southern California, where they hunted, farmed, and had a reputation for waging aggressive warfare. In the late 1940s, anthropologist Alfred Kroeber (the father of author Ursula K. Le Guin) began this Reminiscence, much of it based on memories passed on to Kroeber in 1903 by Jo Nelson, then an elderly Mohave. The book, which was not published until 1973, includes fascinating material on intertribal conflicts; the significance of dreams and the special powers they conveyed on Mohave "visionaries"; weapons and methods of warfare; and the effects of Spanish culture, modern weapons, and American expansion on the Mohave's aggressive activities.
