When Louis XIV revoked the religious freedom of French Protestants, or Huguenots, in 1685, a flood of refugees came to England, many of them skilled artisans and smiths. In this richly illustrated history, Christopher Hartop reassesses the long-acknowledged contribution of the Huguenots and suggests that they were just one—albeit the most significant—of several groups of foreign workers who were responsible for the great flowering of style and technique in English silver between 1680 and 1760. Many beautiful examples of fine silver are seen here in color, along with period illustrations and documents.
