Award-winning filmmaker Chen Kaige recreates the palace intrigues, political assassinations, and epic battles that led to the unification of China's seven feuding kingdoms into one grand empire in the third century BC. Ying Zheng (Li Xuejian), the ambitious King of Qin, recruits his childhood lover, Lady Zhao (the resplendent Gong Li), to secure peace with his most powerful enemy. But when her peaceful mission explodes into a holocaust, a disillusioned Lady Zhao is forced to question her lover's loyalty as well as his destiny.
