Shortly after the first national elections in post-Soviet Afghanistan in 2005, German television host and documentary filmmaker Roger Willemsen accompanied a friend on her return to the country after decades in exile, and witnessed the destruction wrought by 26 years of conflict. But he also saw fragile signs of recovery, including children flying kites, a cinema in Kunduz attempting to put on a free show for women, and girls going to school again. "Afghans don't shake your hand.... Instead they clasp your hand with both theirs ... then they let go and put their own hand right on their heart, so that you know the gesture comes from their heart and wants to reach yours." His lyrical, thoughtful portrait is illustrated with color photos up to 14 x 8 inches.
