Description
German scholar Wilhelm Hauff was ten years old when the Grimm Brothers' compendium of folktales appeared in 1812. It was a time of continuous political turmoil, when dreams of a unified German nation and culture were couched in tales of an imagined idyllic past, and the bright young man was powerfully influenced by them. A dozen years later, as the tutor to two boys in a wealthy family, Hauff began writing his own tales. Though set in exotic locales, often with Islamic characters, Hauff's writings differ from those of the Grimms or E.T.A. Hoffmann in the way that they eschew fantastic wish fulfillment, cleaving instead to familial values and the desire for a dignified place in society. This book presents two such tales, for readers 8 to 12 and younger listeners, illustrated with the jewel-like, stippled paintings of Russian artist Boris Pak and introduced with a thoughtful discussion of Hauff's work and brief life (180227). "Little Mook" is a dwarfish resident of Nicea who, with a pair of magic slippers, tries to become a messenger for the king. "Dwarf Longnose" was a handsome German youth until a sorceress transformed him into a stunted little figure his own mother doesn't recognize, and he now wants nothing more than to return to his family.
