Built on a "blues chorale," John LaPorta's 13-section Theme and Variations contains movements called "Nuage," "Jazz Fugue," "Tribute to Bird," "Changing Times," "Jazz Canon," and "Two Brothers," the latter of which reflects his time with Woody Herman. These late 1950s recordings—almost 80 minutes worth—also include "Perdido," "Triplets You Say," "Fermé la Porta," and "Concertina for Clarinet"—all displaying LaPorta's penchant for cool-school bop and classically influenced arrangements. "Both experimental and inviting—a rare combination. LaPorta shows a heady and polished style on the smoothly flowing and memorably titled 'Fermé la Porta.'''—Philadelphia Inquirer
