A superb bassist and bandleader, Charles Mingus has been increasingly appreciated as a composer since his death in 1979. As his wife Sue told NPR, “There is such a variety in Mingus’s music. You know, he wrote lush ballads. He wrote extended works. He wrote up-tempo swing pieces, be-bop, just about every kind of music there was. He wrote many beautiful ballads about women that he loved.” A generous sampling of that music is heard here, including four rarely heard compositions for his sextet (which he made sound like a big band) and three previously unreleased performances—one of them Dizzy Gillespie’s “Wouldn’t You?” The poetic “symposium” referred to in the title is a narration by Lonnie Elder over the music of “Scenes in the City.” “The album is much more accessible than its title suggests … consisting of little-heard but excellent post-bop jazz.”—All Music Guide
