LPs in which a jazz ensemble improvised on the score of a Broadway musical were popular in the 1950s (Stan Kenton did a memorable one with the score of West Side Story). The all-too-rarely recorded Gerald ("Wig") Wiggins Trio covered the music from the film Around the World in 80 Days in 1956 and the musical The King and I in 1958. Describing a much later live performance of a Wig-led trio, LA Times critic Don Heckman wrote that they were "superb, playing a set that defined the manner in which jazz can be simultaneously imaginative, elegant and swinging,” and the same qualities are present here as well.
