Handy Award nominee Deborah Coleman on her seventh release, which from the first track captivates with its combination of soulfulness and insinuating funk. "Coleman's casual yet animated vocals, mingling defiance with vulnerability, and punchy, abbreviated guitar solos are focused at their sharpest on the self-penned 'Can You Hear Me?' (great, in-the-groove, B-3 accents by Clark). They also stand out on a closing pair by Bill Chinnock (the impulsive 'Lookin' for a Real Love' and an echo-filled, reflective 'A Woman in Love') that luxuriously take their soulful time to state their cases. A knockout cover of Delbert McClinton's churning 'Lie No Better,' the vibrant, slyly witty title song (another Coleman original) and a stinging remake of Ellis Hook's 'Undeniable' also reveal a musician at the top of her game…. Coleman cuts loose on guitar on 'The River Wild,' a chiseled, loping instrumental that slowly unwinds into a nod to early fretboard favorites Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy.
