The story of the Tibetan yogi Milarepa was first written in the 12th century by his disciple Rechungpa; there are several versions of it, yet all end with the scene of old Milarepa who summons his disciples to his deathbed and addresses them with these words: "Trust and pay attention to the law of karma that regulates causes and effects.... Those who are full of worldly desires cannot do anything for other people's sake and cannot be helpful even to themselves.... Load your bodies with hard work and your minds with duties." This biography of Milarepa includes many of his songs—canonical Mahayana Buddhist texts—and is illustrated with drawings.
