Three years after his secret mission to Aquitaine, the poet and diplomat Geoffrey Chaucer once more embarks on royal business, in this second historical mystery in the series by Philippa Morgan. An arduous journey takes him to Florence, which in 1373 is the banking center of Europe. Chaucer has come to secure funds for Edward III's campaign against France. Arrangements have been made with banker Antonio Lipari, but it soon becomes clear to Chaucer that the deal is not favored by Lipari's brother, nor his secretary. After Lipari is found dead, Chaucer realizes he has much to learn about this mysterious and seething city before he can hope to return to England.
