They have been called surreal haikus of the heart, and in an age awash in false advertising, they are bracingly honest assessments from literate men and women unhindered by high expectations or blinkered positivism. And yet, while contributors to the personal advertising in the London Review of Books tend to keep their hopes low, the column has nonetheless produced a handful of marriages, many friendships, and at least one divorce. Hundreds of choice examples appear here, collected between 1998 and 2006, and they are delicious fun.
