In The Nineteenth-Century Lied (Amadeus: 1993), Lorraine Gorrell wrote that Fanny Mendelssohn's "unique voice deserves to be heard, for she has justly earned a place among the respected lieder composers of the 19th century." Mendelssohn herself mourned that her 300 songs were "unheeded and unknown." Lan Rao performs 27 of them here with great beauty and pathos, including "Mignon," "Nachtwanderer," "Gondellied," "An Suleika," "Frühling," "Maienlied," and "Im Herbste." "We can hear at work a sure ear for melody, harmony, accompanimental figuration, and an approach to writing for the voice that is mindful of its technical abilities. Many of the songs, in fact, have a sensitive, delicate, and somewhat lightweight or airy quality about them. Listen, for example to the beautiful Gondellied, Du bist die Ruh, and Über allen Gipfeln ist Ruh…. All of the songs presented here are lovely gems worthy of a listen."—Fanfare
